No but had to go to South Shields for work once. What a shit hole. I stayed in Newcastle (Malmaison) though and had to get this crappy railway that went through places like Jarrow.

Another memory of that cup game was that 6 miners had been killed the week before and there was a minutes silence before the game. Some witty fucker of ours punctuated the silence with "cheer up lads, at least there's six jobs available now".

Think I went to Roker Park twice, the first time was 84 by train I think, can't remember exactly how it happened but me and me MATE spoke to John Lyall before the game and he gave us 2 plum seat tickets for free. The other time went up on the coach and seem to recall it was snowing when we arrived. No idea on the result for either game.

Middlesbrough's revenge on glass for putting its museum in Sunderland is fearsome.
Place is full of shards of broken glass. A veritable pogrom on bottles.

With the SOL behind you walk along the river and you'll come to the national glass museum. More interesting than it sounds.
Hartlepool has a marina and a bit of gentrification going on.

Went to the cup game in 92 and correct it was bloody freezing had a beer in a lovely little village near Durham on the way up as was warned that Sunderland was a shit hole, got a bit lively afterwards aswell!

I was at that cup game as a 9 year old. I can still remember being so cold that I could hardly cheer when we scored.
I also then remember being quite miffed that after that long journey and the freezing cold, we were knocked out in the replay due to an awful back pass from some bloke on loan from Everton.
Great memories with my dad though

I went there for a league game and spent the entire match at the bar. Went up at the 90th minute to find my seat, just to see what the view would have been like.

Had to look it up ... that FA Cup 5th round was Feb 15 1992
My recollection is that we scored with the howling gale and then somehow allowed them to equalise playing into the wind.
Yes, absolutely freezing on the open terrace.
Only other time I have been in Sunderland was for a game in the new stadium ... the season Kevin Phillips scored 30 (?) goals including the one in that game ... May 6 2000
Sunderland as a place appeared to have absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever.

That cup game was horrible, wind blew straight in off the North Sea (which you could see from the terrace)
Dodgy Ray Atteveld back-pass in the replay. Never played for us again after that.

Roker Park in the FA Cup late 80's or early 90's in January, stood on an open terrace was the coldest I have ever been at a football match
The locals are decent as with the Geordies, proper people

A while back I dug into the rivalry and outright hatred between Sunderland and Newcastle
I assumed that it would lay in industrial unrest, shipyard/mining company rivalries and blackleg labour - not so
Interesting tale and history dating back to the civil war times
A new castle was built upon the north bank of the Tyne to protect the crown's interests from the Scots, notably York and set up a forward operating base. As such it was always Royalist
Come the civil war, it received a garrison of troops to reinforce the area.
Sunderland by contrast was Parliamentarian, and it's militia was complimented by a Scottish contingent, the Scots seeing a way to seize the crown by way of Cromwell's parliamentarians
There was a battle between the two and the current term Mackem derives from a then Newcastle pejorative for Scots
It all carries on to the modern day, and having spent a fair amount of time in Newcastle, can confirm that they still hate them with a vengeance

Went Roker Park Boxing Day 1989, saw Sunderland beat Oxford 1-0 Gabbiadini scored. Remember the chippy food being half the price of a London chip ship, no chanting during the game, just random people at random times shouting out 'Howay the lads' and that the people were really friendly.
